Volunteers Needed – Honeysuckle Hack & Tree Planting

The City of Crestwood with the help of the Beautification Committee is embarking on a new initiative to create more ecologically friendly spaces at our parks.  A grant has been received from the Municipal Park Grant Commission of St. Louis County to fund the planning for this program. Community outreach activities will be performed in the coming months to gather information from the residents on what they would like to see at those parks.

In the meantime, the city is moving forward with efforts to remove non-native, invasive species such as bush honeysuckle from the Crestwood parks. Areas removed of honeysuckle will be replanted with better native alternatives that will provide valuable pollinator habitat and better manage stormwater in our community.  We have two volunteer work days scheduled for November that support these plans. These work days are being planned in conjunction with the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Honeysuckle Sweep program.

November 7 – Rayburn Park
9 AM – noon: honeysuckle removal
1 – 3 PM: native tree planting

November 14 – Spellman Park
9 AM – noon: honeysuckle removal
1 – 3 PM: native tree planting

The native shrubs and trees for this project were graciously donated by Forest ReLeaf of Missouri. Their Project CommuniTree program provides free trees to community groups for planting projects.  Additional program details can be found here: http://moreleaf.org/plant/project-communitree/

We’re asking volunteers to wear a mask and bring their own gloves and tools for the event.  Loppers and hand saws for the honeysuckle work and long-handled shovels for the tree planting.  We will have some tools on hand for those that need them.

Volunteers can register for the work days by sending an email to: beautifycrestwood@gmail.com

Questions can be directed to Angie Weber at 314-583-0971 or Jim Gilliam 314-729-4722
